From yesterday's lesson, I have learned the meaning of hypothesis. It is an educated prediction that can be tested. It also describes in concrete terms what you expect will happen in a certain circumstance. Moreover, hypothesis is normally written as IF…., THEN… For instance, if the tomato plant receives more sunlight, then the growth of the tomato plant increase.

We also learned the difference between a hypothesis, theory and law in class. The picture below has a very clear explanation.

I also found this compare and contrast table was very useful for me.

From the video, I have learned that the hypothesis need to be testable as well as has a control variable when carrying out the experiment. One of the incorrect hypotheses that we have made in class was “If a child drinks excessive sugary drinks daily, the ABILITY for a child getting childhood obesity will increase.” The hypothesis is incorrect because the word “ability” is too vague and not able to measure. Besides that, I also get to know that theories come from hypotheses that have been tested for a lot of times.

2. What is the one thing I need help in?

I understood most of the knowledge that I have learned in the class and I have done research to clear my doubt.

3. How am I going to use this new knowledge to teach nature of science in the future?

In future, I will spend more time to teach my students on how to write correct hypothesis. This is because even we as university students are not able to write it correctly. I would also remind my students that the hypothesis that they make have to be testable.

1. What I understand from today's lesson?

For today’s lesson, I have learned some the definitions of notion, science, theories and laws. All of us who go for school will learn science for more than 10 years, but do we really know what the meaning is?
I have learned all the definitions:

i) Notion: idea, opinion, concept
ii) Science: discipline, scholarship, knowledge, skill, learning
iii) Theories: hypotheses, philosophies, models, principles, rules
iv) Laws: regulations, rules, principles, acts
Besides that, I also learned the characteristics of science laws and science theories as well as their differences.

Characteristic of Science Theory

Characteristic of Science Law

*These were the websites that my group used to present the Activity 3.

From what I understood from previous lecture and the information that I got from the Youtube, I knew that science laws is a statement that describes an observable occurrence in nature that appears to always be true. On the other hand, science theories explain how and why things are occurring.

In addition, after I have watched the video, I have learned that theory CANNOT become a law if it is been proven because we cannot prove a theory. We can have evidences to SUPPORT the theories but NOT to PROVE it.

2. What is the one thing I need help in?

Can I know the examples of notion that can be found in science subject? Do science terms appear in notion?

3. How am I going to use this new knowledge to teach nature of science in the future?

In a science subject, students will learn a lot of science terms, theories and laws. But, most of the students would memorize it just to pass exam. As a future teacher, I would explain to them what the theories and laws exactly are as well as their differences. So that it makes sense to students when they learn. For example, students are able to explain that why Newton’s Law of Motion is considered as a law but not a theory.

1. What I understand from today's lesson?

I understood that there was a timeline of science which was started from ancient science to modern science. The first crucial step in the development of the modern scientific worldview was the Corpernican revolution.

Besides that, I also learnt that the differences of science and pseudoscience. In short, science is a systematic study of knowledge which can be proven right and wrong and yet pseudoscience has the superficial appearance of science but which fails to meet the quality standards normally required of science.

2. What is the one thing I need help in?

I personally need a complete timeline of science that enables me to track the following lessons. I have watched a few videos from Youtube and searched some information from internet, but it appeared a lot of names that I had never learnt before in class.

3. How am I going to use this new knowledge to teach nature of science in the future?

When I am teaching the topic of astronomy to my students, I will show them the timeline of science that I have learnt yesterday. This allows them to understand that science were discovered by astronomers, philosophers and many other people long time ago. Besides that, I will also let them know that science is constantly changing. For example, Johannes Kepler and Galileo Galilei found out that planets do not move in circular orbits but rather in ellipses.

Before I attended yesterday’s lesson, I have no prior knowledge about pseudoscience. After I learnt it, I found out that it is important for me as a future teacher to know and tell my students. I will be aware of what science and pseudoscience are before I am teaching my students. I would also remind my students that make sure the facts are reliable before using
